CHICK UPDATE SUNDAY

A restful Sunday morning to get up to as clouds cover the sky and keep the temperature very cool for a mid June day.
I got chores done and then had a cup of coffee and a leisurely breakfast before heading back to the garden to gather lettuce and the last of our spring onions for  a last bowl of wilted lettuce.
I was surprised the lettuce made a come back but it looks very good now.

We had roast beef, baked potatoes, corn and green beans with sour dough toast to go with the lettuce for lunch.
Aa's family were our only guest today as #1 son's family are on their way back from the lake and daughter's family are on their way home from son-in-love's brother's house in Mocksville,NC.
After EL and BB stayed with us while there parents ran to Sam's Club and then they all went home to try and get some things done outside to beat the rain that the dark clouds and rumbling thunder was threatening to bring.
Hubbie went up to spread some straw around the pepper plants before the rain and I put away more laundry.
The rain started just as daughter brought the girls over to stay while she ran a couple errands.
These 2 acted like they were glad to be home again .

RL came up for a quick visit just before daughter got back and then they all went home.
Hubbie and I waited out a pretty heavy rain shower that left 1/2 inch in the gauge before we got out to get chores done. There was a beautiful red sky this evening after the rain.
We had a visitor this evening as this hen wild turkey was checking out the guineas from the back pasture.
She flew up into a tree hopefully to roost for the night in safety.
After we got inside we relaxed for the evening.
My chicken update is overdue but here is what is going on so far this season.
I have this one rooster left out of the first hatch of the season along with one little red silkie in next picture. I sold the black and white silkie that was also out of this hatch.

In this old guinea house and lot I have the red silkie and 2 black silkies out of the second hatch of the season which is all the eggs that hatched for their mama. Also in here from the third hatch of the season that 3 of the 6 eggs hatched are these 3 pullets, 1 black, 1 white speckled and 1 golden speckled.

The next hatch was my incubator eggs. Out of about 18 guinea eggs we found in the nest in the front woods I only have 6 healthy guinea chicks and out of about 20 chick eggs I have 9 healthy chicks. I learned some things from that first hatch and am hoping I can have a higher percentage hatch with the next batch. RL loves watching these guys in their brooder box on the front porch.

A couple days later this black silkie hatched out all 6 of the layer hen eggs I had under her.

And then a nice surprise was when this flighty red silkie hatched 12 little guinea chicks from the 13 eggs I found in another nest in the pasture.

Then so far so good with this layer hen that is due to start hatching some of these 8 layer eggs she has been sitting on which are due to hatch mid week.

And last their is 8 more guinea eggs and 17 more chick eggs in the incubator that have a couple weeks left before hatching.
Whew !!!!  If you are thinking this is a lot of chicks you are right and a lot more work but we have decided not only to replace our own layers but have some roosters for meat for our freezer this year.
I am thankful for the blessings of this day and for the wonderful graceful Savior Jesus Christ. Thankful for the sage travel mercies for everyone to get home safely today.
God Bless and Good Night
